WATCH: Savannah Guthrie Catches Comey Off Guard, Leaves Him Squirming With Two Questions

NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie caught former FBI Director James Comey off guard on Wednesday, leaving him squirming over two tough questions.

During the interview, Comey was stunned when Guthrie grilled him about his integrity and why he sounds so petty toward President Donald Trump in his new book.

As noted by The Hill, Guthrie immediately exposed that Comey attacked Trump’s personal appearance several times in his book, asking the former director if he enjoyed “taking those shots at the president?”

“Some of the most widely cited parts have to do with your description and words about President Trump. Including calling his skin orange and saying he looked like he had tanning goggles. Some people said that was, for lack of a better word, that was a little catty,” she asked.

“No. I didn’t think of them as shots,” Comey replied.

“Really?” Guthrie followed.

“And I still don’t,” Comey said.

“Really?” Guthrie asked again.

Comey tried to deflect by saying he also described his high school boss from a grocery story, but Guthrie wasn’t having it.

“But you’re talking about his hair? Some people are saying, ‘Wait a minute. James Comey, you just got in the gutter with President Trump, who is known for his name-calling.’ He’s called you a slime ball and a nut job and any numbers of things. Did you stoop?” she said.

“I really don’t think so. Again, maybe I’m missing it, but I think I’m describing what his hair looked like.’” he said.

After grilling Comey on why he sounded so petty and catty toward Trump, Guthrie questioned Comey’s integrity.

“You don’t think you’ve diminished yourself?” Guthrie asked.

“I hope not,” Comey replied.

Guthrie was referring to reports that he leaked classified information to harm Trump after being fired last year.

During his testimony in June 2017 before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey admitted he created several memos detailing private conversations he had with President Donald Trump before he was fired.

Comey testified under oath that he leaked the memos to a friend and instructed him to give them to The New York Times. The paper then published a report detailing Comey’s memos and used them as the basis for portraying Trump as erratic and possibly obstructing justice.

While Comey told Guthrie that he didn’t believe he has diminished his own integrity, the American people disagree.

A new Rasmussen poll states that 46 percent of Americans believe Comey should be prosecuted for leaking information to the media while he was leading the FBI.

So nearly half the country wants him prosecuted and, as Guthrie pointed out, his book hasn’t taken off as expected.

He describes almost crying in the Oval Office with former President Barack Obama; admitting he didn’t tell Trump that Hillary Clinton and Democrats funded the dossier; and even attacked Trump’s personal appearance.

Outside of that, many haven’t been impressed at all, and Guthrie exposed that during the interview.
