A Syria military base was just the target of an airstrike, and most outlets immediately blamed Israel for the attack. The Washington Post reported that during the early hours of Monday morning, a Syrian air base was attacked in a missile strike which was carried out by Israeli warplanes. The Syrian and Russian governments have reported multiple casualties as well as the fear of further confrontation between world powers.
Israeli officials wouldn’t comment initially on the claims. The T4 airfield in Homs province that was raided was also thought to be a base for Iranian and Iranian-allied troops. Tensions have been rising lately due to the possibility of United States military action in Syria after allegations of a chemical strike near Damascus late on Saturday night.
Russia, an ally of Syria, called the Israeli raid a “dangerous development.” According to Reuters, they also claimed that reports of a gas attack near Damascus were a “provocation.”
On Sunday, United States officials stated that options were being considered to strike Syrian government targets following the deaths of at least 40 people in the opposition-held town, Douma, which is about 10 miles form the Syrian capital. Trump stated on Sunday that there would be a “big price to pay” for the horrific attack.
It was confirmed by the United States that Israel did hit Syria.
Early on Monday morning, Israel conducted an airstrike against a Syrian air base. Two United States officials told NBC News that the United States was informed in ahead of time. It wasn’t but a few hours after a possible poison gas attack on the final foothold for rebels fighting the Assad regime that the missile attack began.
The Pentagon stated that the United States had nothing to do with the attack
Syrian claims that the United States attacked the Homs air base on Sunday were shot down by the Pentagon. The Pentagon’s statements came after President Trump tweeted “Animal Assad” would have a “big price to pay” for the chemical attack in Douma.
The Washington Post reported:
The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency claimed Syrian air defenses shot down eight missiles fired at the T-4 airbase early Monday morning local time, in an attack which killed and injured an unspecified number of people.
The base, located in a strategic position between the cities of Homs and Palmyra in Syria’s west, has been a key staging ground for Syrian and Russian aircraft during the war.
Earlier, Syrian State TV said the assault was a “likely attack by the US.”
You can bet that there will be more news from Syria very soon.
