Bergdahl’s Lawyer Wants Bergdahl to Be Honored With the POW Medal

With Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl only receiving dishonorable discharge and being downgraded to private, instead of getting a prison time after pleading guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, many people feel his punishment was very light.

However, Bergdahl’s lawyer wants him to be honored with medals for his time as a captive and for the injuries he got from his captors. Eugene Fidell, the lawyer, also is asking for his dishonorable discharge to be overturned.

“We have long felt he was entitled to the POW medal,” he said.

The Prisoner of War medal is given to service member who, “while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces, was taken prisoner and held captive after April 5, 1917.”

During the pre-trial hearing, his defense team stated that he should receive the POW medal and the Purple Heart. Army Lt. Col. Franklin Rosenblatt also believes that Bergdahl should get those awards, and not giving them to him might produce bias from potential jurors.

“We believe this is a prejudice and casts a semblance of guilt,” he said. “We encourage the government to correct that.”

Veterans believe that that Bergdahl not receiving any prison time was a huge failure of the justice system.
